They can be completed either online (via Zoom/Skype), by uploading a video demonstration, or by having a private assessor assess your skills.

The structure of the Problem Gambling Skill Set ensures you graduate with sufficient practical skill so you can apply your knowledge with confidence.
Regular seminars give you the opportunity to apply the theory you have learned in contemporary scenarios. They are also a great opportunity to get together with fellow students and participate in casework sessions under the guidance of a qualified Lecturer. Seminars are held regularly in most capital cities throughout Australia.
Students who may not be able to attend seminars for whatever reason, can elect to complete the practical components through alternate means, such as a one-on-one or small group session with a private assessor. We have private assessors in numerous regional areas across Australia.
Students can also complete their practical components by video recording a demonstration of their skills. We have guidelines available to assist students compile their recordings and develop effective role plays to demonstrate their skills.
Optional tutorials are available at most Student Support Centres. Tutorials provide you with support on each written subject.

It gives practitioners a targeted way to add problem gambling support to what they already do, without committing to a full qualification. It takes around two months to complete if studying full-time, and AIPC offers it fully online so you can complete it while you continue working.
Gambling-related harm may present alongside financial stress, relationship difficulties or employment concerns. This course trains you to recognise what may lie underneath any of those problems. You’ll learn to assess the needs a client brings and work out where their gambling fits within them. From there, you’ll be able to judge what support they need and who else should be involved.
Across two units, you’ll learn to identify gambling-related harm and assess how your client’s gambling has affected the people around them. Gambling-related harm can also affect partners, family members and other people close to the client, so the training considers these broader impacts. Both units require you to demonstrate your skills practically, so you’ll have to show you can conduct an assessment and not just understand how one works.

AIPC teaches the Problem Gambling Skill Set online, so you can study from anywhere in Australia around your existing caseload or shifts. Full-time study takes about two months across two units, and part-time or self-paced options let you go slower if work gets busy. Both units include practical assessments, which you’ll complete online as well.
In most cases, yes. The Australian Counselling Association awards OPD points for completed subjects that include formal assessment and cover at least 60 hours of coursework. PACFA counts online facilitated learning as Category A CPD where it relates directly to your clinical practice. Both units in this skill set include practical assessment, but confirm with your association how they treat nationally recognised skill sets.
Yes. The skill set adds a gambling specialisation on top of your existing qualification. Graduates of the Diploma of Counselling, the Diploma of Community Services or the Diploma of Alcohol and Other Drugs can use it to take on gambling-related work within their current role.
This course makes sense if you’re already practising and gambling keeps coming up in your caseload. It won’t qualify you to work in community services on its own, since it assumes you bring existing skills to it. Two units is a manageable commitment when what you want is depth in one area rather than another full qualification.
