Certificate IV in Dental Assisting

The Certificate IV extends what you can do inside a dental practice beyond chairside support. The Certificate III in Dental Assisting teaches the core skill every dental assistant needs, while this qualification adds advanced chairside work, brief interventions with patients and additional responsibilities in areas such as infection control, workplace safety and practice administration. It runs for 6 months full-time over 7 units, and you’ll need to have finished the Certificate III or an equivalent qualification before you enrol.

Over 7 units, you’ll learn how to:

• Provide advanced chairside support during complex dental procedures

• Implement and monitor infection control policies throughout a practice

• Maintain workplace health and safety, including assessing risk and controlling hazards

• Interpret and apply medical terminology correctly

• Deliver brief interventions that support patient oral health

• Manage the operational side of running a dental practice

Each of these tasks takes you past assisting with individual procedures and into responsibility for how the practice works as a whole.

The Certificate IV in Dental Assisting is a general qualification that prepares you for advanced work across the whole practice rather than a single specialty stream. The course does teach you to promote oral health through brief interventions, where you talk with patients about looking after their teeth and gums between visits. Many dental assistants develop a specialisation once they’re working by taking a position in a practice that focuses on a particular area and learning it in depth on the job.

You’ll complete one practical assessment as part of the Certificate IV in Dental Assisting, which you can do through a small group workshop online, a private one-on-one assessment or a video recording you submit. Workshops run for four hours. Because entry requires a completed Certificate III in Dental Assisting, most students come into this qualification with placement hours already behind them and often work in a practice while they study.
