Certificate III In Dental Assisting

A dental assistant supports dentists and other dental professionals in delivering oral healthcare to patients. They work chairside during procedures, preparing patients for treatment and managing infection control throughout the practice. You’ll spend your days setting up and sterilising instruments, assisting during dental procedures, processing reusable medical devices and supporting patients before and after their appointments. The Certificate III in Dental Assisting covers these responsibilities over 10 units of study.

The Certificate III in Dental Assisting is available online through AIPC. All AIPC courses are delivered by distance education, so you can study from anywhere in Australia and work through the course material at home. Full-time study takes approximately 12 months, with self-paced options available. You’ll also complete a minimum of 350 hours of work placement in a dental practice.

A dental assistant supports the team during treatment, working chairside, preparing patients and controlling the spread of infection throughout the practice. A dental hygienist works more independently, providing preventive care like cleaning teeth, applying fluoride treatments and educating patients on oral health. Dental hygienists complete a higher education qualification and hold registration with the Dental Board of Australia, while dental assistants enter the profession through a vocational qualification like the Certificate III in Dental Assisting.

You’ll complete one practical assessment as part of the Certificate IV in Dental Assisting, which you can do through a small group workshop online, a private one-on-one assessment or a video recording you submit. Workshops run for four hours. Because entry requires a completed Certificate III in Dental Assisting, most students come into this qualification with placement hours already behind them and often work in a practice while they study.

Yes. The Certificate III in Dental Assisting includes a minimum of 350 hours of work placement in a dental practice. During this time, you’ll apply what you’ve learned in a working clinical environment, assisting the dental team with real patients under supervision. You’ll work chairside during procedures, prepare patients for treatment, sterilise and process reusable instruments, and follow the infection control protocols the practice runs on. The Certificate III in Dental Assisting includes the HLTAID001 Provide First Aid certification, which you’ll complete through an external training organisation and submit for credit transfer.

Yes. Graduates of the Certificate III in Dental Assisting can continue to the Certificate IV in Dental Assisting, which extends your skills into more specialised areas of dental practice. The Certificate III covers the foundation units and work experience the Certificate IV requires, so transitioning from one to the next is a common pathway. 

You can also sign up for both qualifications at the same time and study them as one streamlined pathway. If the same units are included in both qualifications, they’ll be credited towards your next course, reducing the number of units you need to complete and potentially shortening your overall study time. Dental assistants need sharp attention to detail, steady hands, strong organisational skills and a calm manner with people who may feel nervous about treatment. You’ll need to have completed Year 10 or equivalent and be at least 16 years old to apply, but you don’t need any professional or academic background in healthcare to get started.
