Frequently Asked Questions

The Certificate IV prepares you for operational and team-leading roles, whereas the Certificate III in Health Administration prepares you for entry-level admin work. At this level, you take responsibility for your own work and use judgement to adapt your skills to situations that fall outside a set procedure. The course covers 14 units instead of 13, and you’ll need Year 12 or a completed Certificate III to enrol.

Across 14 units, you’ll learn how to:

  • Communicate confidently with clinicians, patients and administrative colleagues

  • Manage resources and order stock efficiently for a health service

  • Use administrative systems and workplace technology effectively

  • Handle customer feedback and resolve complaints

  • Work with people living with mental health conditions

  • Apply discretion and judgement when a situation calls for something beyond routine

You’ll demonstrate these skills through four progressive practicals, arranged online by workshop, video or private assessment.

Graduates work as health administration workers, medical receptionists, hospital administration officers and allied health administrators. Because the qualification reflects operational and team-leading responsibilities, employers often consider Certificate IV holders for roles that involve coordinating a team or taking ownership of a particular part of a practice’s operations. The skills transfer between health settings, so you can move from a general practice to a hospital department without starting over.

Yes. The Diploma of Practice Management is the natural next step, which takes you into managing a health practice as a whole. You’ll learn to manage finances, staff and business operations. If you’d rather work more directly with patients, AIPC’s Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance and the Diploma of Allied Health move you into clinical support instead.

Employers throughout the health sector need skilled administrators, including:

  • Public and private hospitals

  • General practices and medical centres

  • Specialist and allied health clinics

  • Community health organisations

  • Aged care and disability service providers

  • Diagnostic services like pathology and radiology

Every one of these organisations depends on people who can keep records accurate, manage resources and communicate well with clinical staff, which is exactly what this qualification teaches you.

This course suits you if you already have administrative experience or a Certificate III and want to take on more responsibility. You’ll be the person others rely on to solve problems, handle difficult conversations and keep a health service running smoothly. Entry requires Year 12 or a completed Certificate III, along with a minimum age of 17. If you’re over 21, two years of relevant life experience through work or study can qualify you instead.

AIPC delivers the Certificate IV in Health Administration fully online, so you can study anywhere in Australia and fit the course around work, family or study you’re already doing. Most full-time students finish in about 12 months, though you have up to five years from enrolment if you’d rather take your time. Your four practicals can be arranged online by workshop, video or private assessment.
